Please read carefully before registering for the Behavior Tools courses:
The BehaviorTools curriculum is designed for everyone from facility and program administrators, to direct care staff, to bus drivers, recreation therapists, day program staff, parents and others!
BehaviorTools helps staff identify what behavior is, recognize 12 common "coercives" that we use that are not helpful in our interactions with consumers; teaches positive tools that we can all use to strengthen relationships with consumers and to manage behaviors that are disruptive, annoying and which can escalate to more serious behaviors if not addressed properly.
BehaviorTools 2 introduces staff to additional tools which are highly effective in the management of problematic behavior.
In order to attend BehaviorTools 2, you must have previously completed BehaviorTools. Please bring proof of completion of BehaviorTools to your BehaviorTools 2 class or you may be unable to attend.
Classes will be conducted in Redding and Chico at the offices of Far Northern Regional Center and in Red Bluff, at North Valley Services, Activity Center-West, in either one day or two 1/2 day sessions. Staff may bring beverages, snacks and/or lunch if they wish. See here for a schedule of upcoming classes.
Each program/facility may send up to 3 staff to each class.
If staff is unable to actually attend on the day of the class, you may send a substitute. If you cannot send a substitute, you must contact Kathy Powers so that arrangements can be made for someone on a waiting list to attend the class instead. Please note that these classes are small, about 12 participants and it is very important that spaces are not left unfilled.
Please identify someone from your facility/program who will call your registered staff a day or two before class to remind staff they are signed up and that it is important that they arrive on time at class.

Pedestrian Safety Awareness
Many consumers are exposed to traffic threats that challenge their experience and abilities. They may have difficulty judging speed, spatial relations, and distance. They may have developed a pattern of “following” staff without understanding or contributing to their own safety. This Pedestrian Safety Awareness sheet provides basic tips for improving pedestrian safety awareness and skills. FNRC recommends that all consumers in your care complete safety awareness training immediately.
