Course #ADAP 255  Human Awareness  Instructor:  Steven Concklin

Human Awareness First Class Handout

This course is being provided as a more focused curricular offering in social-sexual education skills for students who have developmental disabilities (significant cognitive deficits). .  As opportunities for people with developmental disabilities have broadened from the limited options available in segregated day programs, the skills necessary for responsible independence in the community, such as those broadly categorized as self-protection, for example, are seen by educators in the field as essential.  The aim of this course is to prepare students to tackle the rights as well as the responsibilities of adult life and to assist individuals to achieve an interdependent balance that is essential in order to enjoy a meaningful quality of life.  The course will cover several related areas of the domestic domain over the course of four semesters: 1) Self-awareness/self-esteem, 2) Health and hygiene, 3) Self-protection, and 4) Relationships.  Note: Since the subject matter varies each time the course is taught, this course is repeatable three times for a total of four enrollments.
