Cooling centers to open in Shasta, Tehama counties as temperatures approach 110

July 1, 2013 Adam Knight

The Red Cross of Northern California is staffing cooling centers today in Shasta and Tehama counties as  temperatures this afternoon will top 110 degrees.

Eric Kiltz, emergency services coordinator for the Red Cross of Northeastern California, said typically those who can’t afford to run their air conditioners, the elderly or those on fixed incomes, show up to the centers in small numbers. “Historically we have a very low turnout for things like this," Kiltz said.

National Weather Service forecasters expect triple-digit highs to continue through at least Saturday, with temperatures 110 or higher through Thursday

Public cooling centers will be open in several locations from through Thursday.

The cooling centers will be open from 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. and will be staffed by American Red Cross volunteers who will provide drinks and snacks.

The current cooling center locations are as follows:

Redding

St. James Lutheran Church — 2500 Shasta View Dr. (church staff on site at 8 a.m.)

Anderson

Shasta District Fairgrounds — 1890 Briggs St. (Fairgrounds staff on site at 8 a.m.)

City of Shasta Lake

John Beaudet Community Center — 1525 Median Ave.

Red Bluff

Wetter Hall/Day Reporting Center 1840 Walnut Street in Red Bluff. It will be open from July 1 through July 3 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
