In the world of developmental disabilities, employment isn’t just about finding a job; it’s about creating integrated, competitive employment opportunities where individuals with developmental disabilities can work alongside people without disabilities, earning at or above minimum wage. Far Northern Regional Center’s (FNRC) philosophy is that every person, regardless of ability, deserves the right to work in a setting of their choice, with the support needed to succeed.
Since the enactment of California’s Assembly Bill 1041 in 2014, stating, “it is the policy of the State of California that opportunities for integrated, competitive employment shall be given the highest priority for working age individuals with developmental disabilities, regardless of the severity of their disabilities.” FNRC has long been committed to empowering individuals with developmental disabilities by helping create meaningful employment through more inclusive workplaces for working-age individuals with disabilities. For FNRC, work is more than just a paycheck—it’s an opportunity for individuals to learn new skills, build independence, and contribute to their communities. A key element of FNRC’s success in this mission has been its partnership with O2 Staffing, a locally owned agency that plays a vital role in providing employment support for individuals being supported by the Regional Center.
O2 Staffing, part of the O2 Employment Services family, has been a pillar of the Redding community for over 23 years. They are known for their commitment to improving the lives of local residents through employment. As the employer of record for FNRC’s Paid Internship Program (PIP), O2 Staffing plays a crucial role in ensuring participants receive not only paychecks but also essential employment support, such as managing payroll and workers’ compensation claims.
“O2 Staffing goes above and beyond to support FNRC individuals who participate in the Paid Internship Program,” says a community member. “They handle complex tasks with patience, helping participants understand everything from direct deposit to tax filing, always making them feel valued.”
FNRC’s Paid Internship Program pairs job development with on-the-job coaching to help individuals gain employment skills through community-based internships. The goal of the PIP is to provide individuals with the experience and confidence needed to pursue permanent employment. By partnering with local employers, the program ensures that individuals with developmental disabilities can access meaningful, integrated employment in a job of their choice.
The partnership between FNRC and O2 Staffing has created more than just employment opportunities—it has fostered relationships built on trust and mutual respect. Individuals supported by FNRC frequently visit O2 Staffing to pick up their paychecks or time reports, and these visits have led to lasting connections.
Gaby Cervantes from O2 Staffing reflects on this unique relationship, stating, “I cherish being woven into the weekly and monthly routines of our employees at Far Northern. There’s something truly special about this community; they honor their routines yet find joy in reconnecting with one another along the way. Their ability to spread positivity and warmth throughout their journey is inspiring, and it continually offers me fresh perspectives on life. I am so overjoyed daily that Far Northern can provide these opportunities for individuals to grow and thrive, it makes me proud to just be able to help in the little ways that I can.”
Through partnership with O2 Staffing, FNRC is better able to follow California’s Employment First initiative and ensure that every individual has the opportunity to explore jobs of their choosing.
