Finding Calm in a Busy World: How Meditation Helps Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

July 7, 2026 Tre Keys

This article is part of a series of 7 articles about movement, yoga and meditation. These articles are a part of  Far Northern Regional Center’s Health & Wellness Initiative, which promotes resources and opportunities that support lifelong health and wellbeing.

Modern life is filled with distractions. For many individuals with developmental disabilities, managing constant stimulation and unexpected changes can be challenging. Meditation offers a simple but powerful tool for developing focus, reducing anxiety and creating a greater sense of calm.

Meditation teaches individuals to slow down, observe their thoughts and return their attention to the present moment. While this may sound simple, it is a skill that develops over time through consistent practice.

Julie Silva, a certified yoga instructor at the Arc of Butte County, has witnessed remarkable progress among individuals who participate in regular meditation sessions.

“When I first started meditating, we could maybe go three minutes before there was just too much fidgeting. Now, after a year and a half to two years of daily practice, they can easily go 15 or 20 minutes. They’re starting to enjoy the process and enjoy the quiet,” Silva said.

Learning to sit with distractions and gently return attention to the present moment can have meaningful benefits outside of class. Individuals who experience anxiety related to changes in routine may become better equipped to manage those situations without becoming overwhelmed.

Meditation also creates opportunities to develop self-awareness. Participants learn to recognize their emotions, notice stress before it escalates and practice strategies that help them remain grounded.

For families and caregivers, meditation can be an accessible wellness practice that requires little equipment and can be incorporated into daily routines. Even a few minutes of mindfulness each day can help build skills that support emotional wellbeing over time.
