REDDING, Calif. – For Isaac, a determined young man with a heart for horses and hands willing to work, a unique employment opportunity has allowed him to embrace new challenges and gain invaluable job experience. Through Impact Solutions, a workforce integration program in Redding, California, Isaac has thrived in his current position, caring for horses and managing barn tasks. This opportunity has given him both structure and purpose, helping him build essential skills in a supportive, engaging environment.
Impact Solutions connected Isaac with this role, supporting him in his personal growth. “We got connected through people in the community. If there’s an opening, we let each other know,” said Sou Saechao, Founder of Impact solutions.
Isaac’s daily routine begins his day around 8 a.m. after donning work boots to protect against manure. “We usually work for about two hours, focusing first on the back birthing area, which is a priority,” Isaac explained. “On Mondays, after a weekend off, we start with the places that need it most.”
Each workday involves picking up manure and transporting it to a designated dump site. “We use wheelbarrows and pitchforks to gather everything, and on busy days, we prioritize the covered sheds to ensure the horses have a dry, clean place to eat and sleep,” said Dean Burns, Isaac’s job coach. Isaac’s passion for the work is evident. “I enjoy helping keep the area clean for the horses. They can be a bit aggressive, but I love being around them,” he said. He emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “We have safety protocols in place, like making sure I close all gates to prevent accidents.”—a lesson learned from past incidents where horses have bolted.
Working around the horses, Isaac has developed a soft spot for certain animals, including affectionate mares like Madonna, who enjoys following him around and even seeks attention from him as he works. Such moments not only make Isaac’s job enjoyable but also deepen his connection to his responsibilities.
Through this experience, Isaac has built confidence and work skills, learning the value of patience, responsibility, and reliability. “It’s hard work, but it’s rewarding,” he reflects.
Isaac’s success is a testament to the effectiveness of Impact Solutions in facilitating meaningful employment and skill-building for individuals with diverse support needs, helping them gain independence and purpose. Isaac’s journey serves as an inspiration, showing that with support and opportunity, anyone can make a significant impact in their community.
