REDDING, Calif. — Downtown Grounds, a cozy coffee shop nestled in the heart of Redding, offers more than just a caffeine fix. The café, founded and owned by Laurie Cory, serves as a community gathering space where inclusivity is woven into the fabric of its operations.
Downtown Grounds was conceived to create a warm, welcoming environment for everyone and a future objective to provide employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Cory’s vision, deeply rooted in her passion for community building, has turned the café into a space where all patrons can feel at home.
“We wanted a place where people feel comfortable and connected,” Cory said. “It’s important that we provide not just great coffee but also opportunities for people to come together and support each other.”
Cory’s focus on inclusion sets Downtown Grounds apart from typical coffee shops. It provides a place to showcase the artwork of individuals with developmental disabilities, empowering them with meaningful exposure. This unique approach has resonated with locals and helped foster a strong sense of community.
Downtown Grounds offers a unique way for local artists to gain exposure by featuring and selling their merchandise in the café. According to Cory, the collaboration with Artistic Endeavors allows customers to not only view the art but also purchase items directly from the café. “We sell some of the artists’ merchandise right in the coffee shop,” Cory said. “It’s a way to help them get more exposure while also offering our customers something unique and locally made.” The initiative supports local talent while giving patrons a chance to take home one-of-a-kind pieces.
Occasionally Downtown Grounds is not just a café but also a hub for local events, from live music to art showcases. The café frequently partners with local organizations to host events aimed at bringing people together and supporting various causes.
“We’re always looking for ways to engage with the community,” said Cory. “Our events are a great way to celebrate local talent and create an inclusive space for everyone.”
One of the upcoming highlights on the calendar is Artistic Endeavors Gallery Day, scheduled for October 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will be held at 491 Lake Blvd, Redding, CA 96003, and will showcase a variety of local artists. It’s a celebration of creativity and a chance for the community to support local talent in a laid-back, friendly atmosphere.
Community is at the core of Downtown Grounds’ mission. Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, Cory continues to find ways to make the café a vital part of Redding’s social fabric. The café’s inclusive hiring practices and support for local events have helped Downtown Grounds become a beloved local institution.
“We’ve built something special here,” Cory noted. “We’re not just a coffee shop—we’re a part of the Redding community.”
With its focus on fostering connection, promoting inclusivity, and hosting events that bring people together, Downtown Grounds stands as an example of what a small business can do to positively impact its community.
